MPs caught up in the current debacle over their expenses may be more than a little abashed by the message on a poster van touring Westminster this week.

A truck emblazoned with the disingenuous question “Trouble with expenses?” offers a simple solution to the current scandal involving MPs’ expense claims – courtesy of Software Europe, a UK company specialising in expense management systems and solutions.

The tongue-in-cheek campaign refers passers-by to the website www.troublewithexpenses.com and was the brainchild of Software Europe MD Neil Everatt:

“I expect any MPs who see it will be a bit bemused,” said Mr Everatt, 43. “I don’t think they will be embarrassed – it takes quite a lot to embarrass MPs doesn’t it?

“The campaign is tongue-in-cheek and I suppose we are poking fun at the current discomfiture of many MPs, but there is a serious point to be made here.

“It’s not just MPs’ expenses that can get out of control. The same kind of excesses exposed in the Press regarding MPs’ claims are being replicated by employees all over the country, and costing businesses and other organisations millions and millions of pounds.

“Our expenses software is a product designed specifically to make any abuses and errors transparently obvious and easily remedied. If the House of Commons were to adopt it, this could go a long way towards restoring public respect for MPs and rebuilding confidence,” said Mr Everatt.

“It’s already doing the job very successfully for organisations including NHS Trusts, Shared Services and Blue Chip companies.”
